Meteorologist Grant Skinner here in the weather center. Today is a WRAL Weather Alert Day due to the dangerous heat. A Heat Advisory is in place for the entire area excluding Person county from 11 AM through 8 PM with heat index values reaching 106 degrees here in the Triangle. High pressure will continue strengthening over the southern U.S. into the weekend. A stray storm is the only thing to cool us off this afternoon. Highs reach the mid-upper 90s. The heat index likely peaks between 103 and 106 degrees. Today is the start of a 6-day heat wave. Highs during this time will likely reach the 100-degree mark and maybe a bit higher by Tuesday and Wednesday. This will be an extended period of dangerous and life-threatening heat, so please do your best to remain cool. You will not likely find relief at night since lows in some locations will hover in the upper 70s-80.
