Magens Bay Board Votes to Collaborate With DPNR on Water Use Plan

The Magens Bay Authority board has voted to collaborate with the Department of Planning and Natural Resources on an official water use plan for the bay that has seen increasingly heavy marine traffic in recent years. It also voted to support draft legislation by Sen. Marvin Blyden concerning anchoring in the bay, which under Virgin Islands law is a designated area of special concern.

Virgin Islander Leads Effort to Support South African School

Kenrick Isaac, who grew up in the Virgin Islands and was born in St. Kitts, is spearheading a unique project aimed at supporting a school in South Africa through the power of documentary filmmaking. His initiative, inspired by a visit to Johannesburg, seeks to raise the profile of the school, Kgololo Academy School, founded by Thulani Mbatha and Waahida-Thobekile, highlighting their transformative work in education.

Recycling Enthusiasm Keeps Glass Crusher Busy on St. Thomas

Eighteen months after efforts began, glass recycling has taken hold on St. Thomas. According to data gathered by members of the St. Thomas Rotary Eco Club, 10 tons of glass have been diverted from the island’s landfill.

A passenger ejected from a St. Thomas to New York flight was granted permission to travel after making an unscheduled stop in Superior Court Magistrates Division on May 27. Court documents say defendant Clayton R. Hines was removed from American Airlines Flight #936, scheduled to depart May 26, after flight attendants reported an intoxicated passenger on board.

St. Croix Man Shot by Father Dies from Injuries, Police Report

A St. Croix man who was shot by his father on Thursday after attempting to attack him with a machete and then a reciprocating saw has died from his injuries, the V.I. Police Department reported Friday morning. The father has not been charged. 

Elections Board Votes to Eliminate Territorial Party Candidates from 2024 Ballots

At an emergency meeting on Thursday, the Board of Elections voted to eliminate the names of candidates running for territorial offices from the 2024 ballots. The vote came after a closed-door executive session in which Elections officials discussed the matter with lawyers from the Justice Department.

Beach Advisory for May 27 – May 31

DPNR performed water quality analysis at 18 designated beaches throughout the territory during the week of May 27 – May 31, 2024. The following beaches meet water quality standards and are considered safe for swimming and fishing.
