With the district in financial straits but on the mend, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) Superintendent Dr. Brent Jones has had to make some difficult decisions in order to bring balance back to the budget and establish a new fiscal and educational landscape.

The senior broadcast journalism capstone at Howard University takes a multimedia approach to stories ranging from crime to caregiving, to culture and sustainable fashion. Being in the nation’s capital, they have the opportunity to report from The White House and Capitol Hill.

The good news: Black-owned businesses are more likely than other businesses to have a low level of debt, or no debt at all. The bad news: that’s because Black-owned businesses are far less likely to be approved for loans in the first place, and Black business owners are more likely to pull from their personal savings for business expenses.
