After a lengthy trial, Sergeant Dion Bascom was yesterday found guilty of committing cyber crimes  against Superintendent Mitchell Caesar and Sergeant Kester Cosbert.

The ruling was handed down by Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court, according to the police.

Earlier in the week Bascom was acquitted at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court of similar charges in relation to  Caesar and another cop.  (See other story on page 2.)

On the 14th of November, 2022, Bascom appeared before Senior Magis-trate Azore at the Vigilance Court where he was charged with two offences under the Cyber Crime Act No. 16 of 2018.

The particulars of the charges read that on the 11th day of August, 2022, Sergeant Bascom at Dazzell Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, in the East Demerara Magisterial District, used a computer system to transmit electronic data with intent to humiliate, harass or cause substantial emotional distress to  Caesar and  Cosbert.  Bascom pleaded not guilty to both charges and was granted $50,000 bail on each charge.

After the guilty ruling yesterday,  Bascom’s lawyer requested a Probation Report to be done prior to sentencing. As such, the request was granted by the Court and the matter was adjourned to the 17th February 2025 for presentation of the Probation Report and sentencing.

Senior Police Legal Advisor, attorney-at-law Mandel Moore represented the State while Bascom was represented by attorney-at-law Nigel Hughes.

The charges stem from allegations Bascom had made over the unsolved murder on Main Street of Ricardo Fagundes.
