Women are opting for a unique procedure called the labia puff to enhance, shape and rejuvenate their vaginal area.
How does it work?
The procedure itself is somewhat similar to cosmetic lip fillers, where dermal fillers or even a patient’s own fat are injected into the labia majora (the outer lips of the vulva), according to The Centre For Surgery. The goal is to add volume, creating a fuller and more symmetrical appearance. This is often done to address concerns related to aging, hormonal shifts, or the effects of pregnancy, which can lead to changes like sagging, deflation, or an altered shape of the labia.
It may sound unusual, but the popularity of cosmetic procedures like the labia puff have been steadily increasing in recent years. In 2021, there were 18,813 labiaplasty procedures performed, marking a 36% rise compared to 2020, according to the Aesthetic Plastic Surgery National Data Bank Statistics. On a global scale, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reported 164,667 labiaplasty procedures in 2020, a 73% increase from 2015.

Fenwa Milhouse, M.D., a Chicago-based urologist, told Allure in an article published Nov. 11, 2024, that she believes the labia puff will be a common procedure over the next decade.
“One day it’s going to be a household type of thing, where we talk about it the way we talk about breast implants,” she said. Connecticut-based cosmetic doctor, Mona Gohara, revealed that she has patients coming in “once every couple of weeks” to get their labia puffed.
Why do some women opt for this procedure?
The vulva is made up of fatty tissue that undergoes various changes after puberty, including lengthening, shrinking, sagging, and discoloration. These shifts can be influenced by factors such as childbirth, sexual arousal, and even the menstrual cycle.
Estrogen depletion plays a key role in these changes, as it’s the hormone responsible for maintaining the firmness and vitality of our skin. When estrogen levels drop, collagen and elasticity break down, leading to sagging and wrinkles.

These physical changes can make some women feel self-conscious and less confident. For those seeking to regain a sense of self-assurance, the labia puff procedure can be a great option. It helps smooth out lines, wrinkles, and imperfections for a more youthful and aesthetically pleasing appearance. The procedure can also enhance symmetry to the labia and boost self-esteem by aligning one’s physical appearance with personal aesthetic desires. Additionally, it may improve comfort during intimate activities or when wearing certain types of clothing by alleviating issues related to excess skin or tissue.
