NPHC Conference

 

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. also referred to as the Divine Nine, is the umbrella organization that houses the nine black Greek- letter organizations. The NPHC was organized on May 10, 1930 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The chartering organizations were Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., joined the council, followed by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in 1937. NPHC became incorporated in 1937 under the laws of Illinois. In 1997, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. joined NPHC as its ninth affiliate member. It was noted that of the nine social fraternities and sororities comprising the NPHC, five were started at Howard University. A special commendation was given to this University for encouraging college students to develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.
