The African American 4 A’s Accountability Alliance hosted primary election forum
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - We have less than a month to decide what candidate to vote for in the primary elections. The African American Accountability Alliance hoped to make that decision easier for Alachua County residents.
The alliance has been doing this forum since 2005 until 2021. This is the first year the forum has been held since the COVID-19 pandemic.
Larry McDaniel is the president of the Political Action Committee (PAC) and is glad to have this event again.
“We are trying to get a feel for the candidates and their stance on issues and look at the relationship of their stance on issues to what our agenda is on the Eastside. Also, our agenda on African American community and our agenda overall,” McDaniel said.
Rodney Long, the president of the African American Accountability Alliance, is pleased that this will inform voters before the elections.
“People understand the issues and more specifically the African American community. We need to make sure we know that the candidates running for office are going to address the issues that are important to African American voters in Alachua County,” Long said.
The PAC will endorse candidates who are in the upcoming races.
“We either do one of three things, yes, no, or no endorsement. No endorsement is important because it hopefully sends a message that there are some things we want to have you do differently and they have a chance to come back and say why did you not endorse me. We are sure to let them know that,” McDaniel added.
Long said it’s important to research the candidates and vote for the one that best represents you. The primary election will be held on Aug. 20 and the general election will follow on Nov. 5.
