Malawi Women’s National Football Team Coach Lovemore Fazili and others have been left in the dark on their future as Football Association of Malawi (Fam) is yet to open contract extension discussions, Malawi News Sport has learnt.
Contracts for Fazili, De Klerk Msakakuona (Malawi Under- 17-boys), Maggie Chombo (Malawi Under-20-girls) and Trevor Kajawa all fell vacant on December 31 2023.
The coaches can easily sign deals with other teams as they are currently free agents.
Fazili, who guided the Scorchers to their first ever Cosafa Women’s Cup glory last year, said he was waiting for Fam to initiate extension discussion.
“Yes my contract expired on December 31 and as usual I will wait to hear from my bosses whether it will be renewed,” Fazili said.
Similarly, Chombo said she does not know what is next.
“We are yet to be told what’s next because I did not sign any contract. I have not been told anything so far,” Chombo said.
Msakakuona and Kajawa could not be reached for comment.
However, Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda said issues concerning expired contracts have been forwarded to Fam Technical sub-committee for their next course of action.
“There are a number of national team coaching positions including that for Scorchers which are vacant due to contract expiry. The executive has tasked the technical committee to review and recommend what should be done. This process will be undertaken soon,” he said
But Fam Technical sub-committee chairperson Madalitso Kuyera was yet to return to us when we went to press Friday.
