PARAMARIBO, Suriname, CMC – President Chandrikapersad “Chan” Santokhi has sought to re-assure citizens that his administration is creating a safe environment in which they could strive, as the Dutch-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country deals with an upsurge in criminal activities.

Santokhi met with various government officials and security agencies, including Vice President Ronnie Brunswick, Chairman of the National Assembly Marinus Bee, Minister of Justice and Police Kenneth Amoksi, Minister of Defense Krishna Mathoera, and senior officials of the Suriname Police Force, on Monday, expressing concern over the recent cases of crime.

“We are committed to creating a safe environment in which our citizens can thrive,” Santokhi said, acknowledging that a new approach is needed given the recent escalation of crime nationwide.

The state-owned Suriname Communications Service said that President Santokhi has, therefore, instructed the various stakeholders to work harder to bring the situation under control and maintain safety.

“We are committed to continuing our efforts to fight crime, maintain order, and create a safe environment where our citizens can thrive. That is why we will go to the maximum until we have guaranteed this,” he added.

Amoksi underscored the importance of controlling the situation, announcing that stricter measures would be taken, including an increase in roadblocks and a tightening of the country’s immigration policy.

“You don’t fight crime alone, we need the community,” Amoksi said, underlining the crucial role of increased cooperation between all stakeholders, including the citizens.
