Richard Vernon sworn in as Mayor of MoBay

Councillor Richard Vernon is the new Mayor of Montego Bay and chairman of the St James Municipal Corporation. 

Councillor Vernon, 34, was elected as mayor on Thursday at the Montego Bay Cultural Centre in the second city.  

He had been serving as Montego Bay's deputy mayor and vice-chairman of the municipal corporation since September 2020, under the leadership of the previous mayor, Leeroy Williams. 

Vernon is the councillor for the Montego Bay South Division. He was first elected as councillor in the 2016 local government election.  

His deputy mayor is Councillor Dwight Crawford of the Spring Garden Division.

The Jamaica Labour Party won 11 of the divisions in St James, while the People's National Party won six.
