Mahaicony pensioner dies after collision

A sixty-eight-year-old man is dead following an accident yesterday morning at Wash Clothes, Mahaicony in which the bicycle he was riding collided with a lorry.

The dead man has been identified as Deonarine Lalchand of Wash Clothes, Mahaicony Branch Road, East Coast Demerara. The incident occurred at 8:05am.

According to a police report, the lorry which was driven by a twenty-five-year-old man was proceeding south along the eastern side of the road when he tried to overtake the pensioner going in the same direction.

Enquiries revealed that Lalchand veered into the path of the lorry when he tried to dodge a pool of water along the road. To avoid a collision, the driver of the lorry swerved to the western parapet. However, despite his efforts, his left rear wheel collided with the pedal cyclist causing him to fall unto the road where the same rear wheel ran over him.

Lalchand suffered multiple injuries to his head and body.

The man was picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His body has since been moved to Anthony’s Funeral Home where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.

The driver of the lorry is currently in police custody.
