I resent being referred to as a ‘comebackie’

Dear Editor,

Please allow me some space in your newspaper to express some of my views as a citizen of Guyana who lived out of Guyana for more than thirty years.

Firstly I resent being referred to as a “comebackie” because I am a Guyanese who has lived abroad and have been an ambassador for my country in every sense. I can understand the ordinary man in the street saying these things, but when it reaches to the level of Parliament, no wonder people are so resentful to people who are returning home. But, guess what, it is because I have lived abroad and had some exposure, to other Parliament sessions, that I can recognize the type of crudity that is taking place in our Parliament. My goodness, Parliament is a place where serious decisions are made, not a “war” zone. I am appalled at the way people are allowed to disturb and “heckle” each other during presentations. Man, I am so embarrassed. Parliament is not the “campaign trail”, people have taken oath hence they should conduct

themselves in a more civil manner.

Secondly, I am concerned about the road signs which tell one the speed they should travel. These signs should be more prominent because when the police have to stop you for excessive speed; it is because those signs are ridiculously inconspicuous.

I am happy to be home, as such I should be made to feel more welcome, by all Guyanese.

Yours faithfully,

Veronica Shanks
