Apply for NSFAS 2021: Everything you need to know about registration

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is now encouraging youngsters to apply for the academic year ahead. Following the turbulent times experienced during lockdown, universities and TVET colleges are offering students the chance to follow their dreams amid this global pandemic. The registration period opened earlier this month.

NSFAS funding: What if I didn’t register for the academic year?

In a statement issued by NSFAS, they have assured applicants that the funding ‘will cover students until their qualification is complete’, subject to academic criteria. They have also offered advice for students who haven’t registered for the academic year, despite gaining approval for funding in 2020.

“If you were approved for 2020 funding, but never registered for the academic year, you will need to apply to receive 2021 NSFAS funding. Remember to apply online before the close of the application period.”

“Once you are approved for NSFAS funding, the funding covers you until you complete your qualification; provided you continue to meet the academic criteria. You just need to focus on studying and passing your modules to secure your continued funding.”

Can I apply for NSFAS funding in 2021?

Worried about going through the NSFAS process? Well, there’s no need: The application process can be broken down into six simple steps. We’ve got information on timelines, eligibility criteria, and the required supporting documents below:

• The closing date for applications is November 30, 2020.
• Applications are open for Grade 9 to12 learners and out-of-school youth who wish to further their studies.
• Applicants can only create one profile for themselves.
• The funding applies to any eligible applicant to a TVET college or university in South Africa.
• However, you cannot apply if you’re studying for a second undergraduate degree. Students from a household with a combined yearly income of R350 000 or more are also disqualified, and non-South Africans won’t be considered either.
• You’ll need a copy of your ID or birth certificate to register and create a profile on the myNSFAS portal. Other supporting documents required are a parent’s ID, and if applicable, a pay advice letter. You do not need to declare SASSA grants.
