- The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the death of a suspected robber who was shot dead following an armed robbery at a butchery.
- Another suspect was injured and is currently in hospital.
- Police said a high-speed chase ensued and a shootout followed.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is probing the death of an armed robber who died during a shootout with police in Strand.
The incident took place on Saturday on the corner of the N2 and Broadway Boulevard.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk said officers were involved in a high-speed chase when the suspects opened fire on the police.
"The suspects were travelling at a high speed on the N2 when they were spotted by police members who gave chase. The suspects shot at the police, who returned fire."
Van Wyk added the suspect's vehicle came to a halt at the intersection of N2 and Broadlands.
"A 21-year-old man sustained injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. An unknown male was declared deceased on the scene. Police have opened an inquest docket for further investigation.''

IPID national spokesperson Ndileka Cola said a group of six armed men allegedly robbed the butchery and fled with a large sum of money, laptop and cellphone.
Minutes later, Flying Squad members stopped the alleged robbers as they were fleeing from the scene.
Fire
"The suspects ran away whilst shooting at the members, and the members returned fire. They [the suspects] later jumped out of the vehicle they were travelling in and ran in different directions while still shooting at the members."
Cola added one of the suspects was fatally shot, while the another one was injured and is currently in hospital. Four other suspects were arrested.

"All the stolen items have been recovered, including an undisclosed amount of cash. Over and above that, three firearms and one toy gun were recovered from the suspects. Furthermore, the team discovered that the vehicle used by the suspects was hijacked in Gugulethu."
The suspects are set to appear in the Grabouw Magistrate's Court.
