Van Wyk completes ‘biggest transfer in Scottish Women’s football’

Banyana Banyana captain Janine Van Wyk completes blockbuster move to Scottish giants Glasgow City FC.

Janine Van Wyk becomes the latest Banyana Banyana player to secure a move abroad after being snapped up by Scottish giants Glasgow City FC.

Van Wyk, South Africa’s most experienced female footballer with 170 international caps, joins the 14-time Scottish Women’s Premier League champions ahead of the 2020/2021 campaign.

The Banyana Banyana captain has featured at two Olympic games while also guiding the national team to their maiden Fifa Women’s World Cup in France last year. Her move to Glasgow City comes after an injury troubled time at Danish outfit Fortuna Hjørring.

Janine excited for Women’s Champions League football

Glasgow City are in the knockout round of the 2019/20 Women’s Uefa Champions League campaign where they face German outfit Wolfsburg on the 21st of August 2020 in the quarter-final round.

“I am extremely excited to start this new chapter in my football career with a football club that is known to be the best team in the Scottish top League.”

“I look forward to playing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, win titles and most importantly continue to learn as much as I can about the insights of the game and hopefully add value to the squad with the experience I carry.”

Glasgow delighted by arrival of Van Wyk

Glasgow City head coach Scott Booth has expressed great delight in the arrival of a player of Van Wyk’s caliber and experience and believes her leadership qualities will take the team from strength to strength.

“We are absolutely delighted to bring Janine van Wyk to our club. She has incredible experience and I feel this will be key for us this season. Janine captained her nation at the 2019 World Cup and is their record cap holder. I know that she will 100% lead by example and fit in to our already talented squad.”

Banyana Banyana reaping the fruits of their international successes

Van Wyk adds to the growing list of Banyana Banyana players that have been snapped up by European teams. She joins the likes of Thembi Kgatlana, Linda Motlhalo, Bambanani Mbane, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Nothando Vilakazi who have all recently earned moves to top European teams.
