Five Chefs Make Their Own Version Of American Pie For ‘Fargo’ Season 4

In celebration of the fourth season of Fargo, five chefs have put their own spin on the quintessential American pie for a special kit fans can win online at FargoFlavors.com.

The latest installment of the critically acclaimed anthology series from FX debuted on September 27. The new season, starring Chris Rock and Jason Schwartzman, tells the tale of two rival crime syndicate families fighting for control and a piece of the “American Dream” in Kansas City, Missouri in 1950.

To capture the spirit behind the show’s new story line, FX asked culinary talents Marcus Samuelsson, Daniela Soto-Innes, Einat Admony, Nyesha Arrington and Alisa Reynolds to share pie recipes reflective of their personal heritages and their take on what the phrase “as American as apple pie” means today.

James Beard award-winning chef and international restaurateur Marcus Samuelsson created cloudberry pie with a Västerbotten cheese crust. These two ingredients are nods to his childhood in Sweden. The dessert, which uses spiced butter for the crust and has honey whipped cream on the side, also contains flavors that celebrate his Ethiopian heritage.

The recipe from Daniela Soto-Innes, chef and partner of Cosme and Atla in New York and the 2019 World’s Best Female Chef, is Pay de Limón. Her version of pie features lime cream and layers of cinnamon cookies. The chef, who learned to make pies from her grandmother, says on the website that this recipe connects her to her family in Mexico City as well as her culture and spirit.

Einat Admony, the chef and owner of New York’s fine-dining Middle Eastern restaurant Balaboosta and falafel chain Taïm, contributed a recipe for pecan pie with Medjool dates on a tahini crust. For her, all of these flavors evoke memories of her childhood as a Persian-Yemenite Jew born and raised in Israel.

For African American-Korean chef Nyesha Arrington in Los Angeles, an American pie looks like her great-grandmother Lena’s lemon meringue pie with a gingersnap cookie crust. The chef, who was a contestant on Top Chef’s ninth season and is currently the host of Eater’s video series Plateworthy and Improv Kitchen, uses Meyer lemons—one of her favorite ingredients from her native California—for the recipe.

The pie from chef Alisa Reynolds of popular soul food eatery My 2 Cents in Los Angeles is a double-layer sweet potato pie that pays homage to her family’s Southern heritage. The recipe also reminds the chef of her childhood and the holidays.

A winner of a pie kit receives two different samples out of a variety of five pies, two recipe cards and Fargo-branded accessories such as an apron and pie server. Winners are selected on a first-come, first-serve basis. All five recipes are also available online.

There will be a separate contest to win the Fargo pie kits on morning radio show The Breakfast Club on Power 105.1 FM.
