The Washington Teachers’ Union, in coordination with D.C. Public Schools, will have a “situation room” designed to quickly respond to concerns about coronavirus-related matters as in-person learning resumes.

“The situation room is basically where the chancellor and I every day would have discussions about reports coming in from you, from 115 schools and him intervening right away to address issues at that school,” WTU President Elizabeth Davis said in an online address to teachers and parents Tuesday, WTOP reported.

Davis said the situation room was requested after the death of Helen Marie White, a Ballou STAY Opportunity teacher who got the virus in January and died shortly after. It hasn’t been determined whether White contracted the coronavirus at the school.

Davis said she and DCPS Chancellor Lewis Ferebee will communicate every weekday at 9 a.m. and at 4 p.m. to discuss issues such as coronavirus cases, contact tracing, social distancing and cleaning protocols. She said the chancellor would the respond to the concerns within 24 hours.
