The Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) has suspended its season indefinitely due to the ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

This is according to PRO/Organizing Secretary of the federation, Runita White.

White, however, told this publication that the decision hinges on if or when things return to a semblance of normalcy.

“The decision at this moment is to suspend all events for 2020. However, that’s just a temporary decision. We want to see how things will play out in the next few months and then we will be able to say whether there will be a Nationals Championship for 2020.”

Prior to the outbreak, the federation successfully hosted the Novices and Juniors Powerlifting Championships in February at the St Stanislaus College.

Champion lifters like Vijai Rahim and Carlos Peterson-Griffith have signalled their intentions to compete if the season restarts.

Notes: The rapid spread of the coronavirus has caused cancellations and postponements of countless sporting events and has affected sports around the globe.

The biggest being the International Olympic Committee deciding to postpone the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo until next year.

To date, Guyana has recorded 154 total confirmed cases of the virus. There are 62 active cases and the number of death remains at 12.
