Bafana Bafana midfielder Dean Furman has completed a move to English League 2 outfit Carlisle United FC.

The former Chelsea youth academy product ended his five year stay at SuperSport United at the beginning of the lockdown period in April 2020 after deciding to return back home to England.

Dean Furman joined Matsatsantsa from English League One side Doncaster Rovers in 2015 and went on to win the hearts of many South Africans while earning over 50 international caps for South Africa.

Dean Furman signs for League Two side

Carlisle United FC confirmed the signing of the 32-year-old midfielder via an official club statement on Friday morning. Dean Furman joins the club as a free agent until the end of the 2020/2021 campaign.

“Carlisle United are delighted to confirm that South African international midfielder Dean Furman has joined the club until the end of the 2020/21 campaign.” a club statement read.

“Dean Furman, 32, moved across to England from his native country at the tender age of five and was snapped up by Chelsea when he was scouted by the London giants when he was just nine-years-old.

“Moving back to England just as the lockdown struck, he has spent the last week on trial with United prior to accepting his new deal.”

Carlisle delighted to land Bafana Bafana star

Carlisle head coach Chris Beech expressed his great delight in landing someone of the pedigree of Dean Furman ahead of the new season.

“This one could work out to be an excellent signing for us, and I’m delighted we’ve managed to do it.” Beech said.

“He’s such an intelligent footballer, with the ability to dictate a game – his retain and regain of the ball is exceptional and he adds leadership and maturity into that area of the pitch, when it’s needed.

“Dean Furman will one hundred percent help to improve our other midfield players through the application of his work, and that’s a huge plus for me. We’ve got some real talent in the building and I’m excited to see that progress.

“Dean’s on the older side of players we’ve recruited this summer at 32 but nevertheless he’s one that’s in fantastic shape, super fit, and usually tops the stats in training, game retains and regains during the time he’s been with us. He’s a great pro with a great attitude, and I’m looking forward to him making us even better.”

Bafana Bafana head coach Molefi Ntseki confirmed earlier this year that Dean Furman will remain as the national team’s vice captain despite his move to England.
