Representing Maine during the second night of the Democratic National Convention, State Rep. Craig Hickman of Winthrop. Hickman got 30 seconds to speak during the roll call as Democrats in the 57 U.S. states and territories voted to officially nominate Joe Biden as their Presidential candidate.
Hickman, who's the first openly gay African-American member of the Maine legislature. using his time to talk about the American Dream during the short video recorded on his farm.
"My American Dream? I'm living it! A 25-acre organic farm by the lake, a roadside produce stand, and a bed & breakfast. My husband and I aren't corporate tycoons, we just want to make an honest living and feed our community." Hickman said in the video.
Speaking to WMTW before the vote he says Tuesday night's roll call is his favorite part of the conventions, as it's the true official act: selecting their party's nominee.
This year, of course, former Vice President Joe Biden.
"It's time for a new beginning. Sometimes we have to go back in order to go forward. Joe Biden represents an administration that dug us out of a ditch." Hickman said.
Hickman grew up in Milwaukee, Wis., where the convention is happening this year and says he was looking forward to going back. But, due to coronavirus, he and almost every other convention delegate are taking part virtually.
