Parole Board reconstituted

The Parole Board has been reconstituted and this has been published in the Official Gazette dated November 7th. Its life will run for one-year as opposed to the usual two-year period effective November 5th to November 4th, 2021.

Its Chairman remains retired Justice Oslen Small.

Its members meanwhile are returning Psychiatrist Dr. Bhiro Harry, an Assistant Commissioner of Police and Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels.

Deoram Timram, Rabindra Chand, Ayube Mohammed, Joseph Bharrat and Indranauth Persaud all chairmen of the visiting committees of the five prisons respectively—Timehri, Georgetown, Lusignan, Mazaruni and New Amsterdam have also been appointed members.

Head of the Parole Unit and Secretary to the Board remains Gordon Smith and Sylvia Conway is also a returning member.

A number of prisoners and their relatives had bemoaned the sloth in the reconstitution of the Board after its expiration in June. Inmates—particularly those who had petitions pending had called for its resuscitation.

Their cries had come on the heels of prison unrest and an outbreak of the Coronavirus behind bars.
