Nigerian midfield dynamo Wilfried Ndidi helps rampant Leicester to Premier League summit

Lagos-born player scores against Chelsea to boost Foxes' genuine title ambitions

POWERHOUSE: Wilfried Ndidi

LEICESTER BEAT Chelsea 2-0 to go top of the Premier League with a ruthless performance tonight (Jan 19), with Wilfried Ndidi and James Maddison scoring the goals in a tough night for Frank Lampard and his team, reports the Voice of Sport from King Power Stadium.

Leicester started with an unchanged side from the team that beat Southampton a few days ago, and it was the same score line for the Foxes who were on point from the first whistle to the last.

On six minutes, Ndidi opened the scoring for Leicester following a corner, the Nigerian rifled home from 20 yards with a goal that spurned hilarity from the Foxes bench.

The African midfield dynamo doesn’t get many goals and his Brendan Rodgers remarked in the post-match press conference: “The last few games he’s hit some and they’ve hit the corner flag or gone over the stadium.” But make no mistake, this was a brilliant strike that cannoned in off the post.

It was fitting for Ndidi to shine in a game like this, for all his industrious work off the ball, he is often boxed in as a defensive enforcer, but his technical ability is far beyond that.

He displays a great range of passing and gets a good amount of Leicester attacks moving by breaking up play with a quick pass.

Chelsea got off to a tenacious start and were looking to exploit the high line of Leicester, but Tammy Abraham had a difficult night and young defender Wesley Fofana left him a frustrated figure.

The Blues’ were blunt in attack all night, and lacked creativity with Kai Havertz, amongst others, anonymous all match.

Fofana, destined for a great career, was solid as a rock. He barely put a foot out of place and it could be argued this was his best performance in the famous blue shirt to date.

This defeat will pile more pressure on Lampard with the Chelsea team now in eighth, with many of their direct rivals having two games in hand on them.

He looked an anxious figure in the warm up, watching his players go through their drills at very close quarters. That anxiety will only be increased now as the questions around his future increase.

The result is not the massive concern, it is the attitude of the Chelsea players that provides the biggest problem.

They lacked any real urgency and even when they went behind, lacked ideas and leadership on the pitch. That will seriously worry the Chelsea hierarchy.

The expensively assembled Stamford Bridge outfit have been woeful against the other teams in the so-called Big Six this season, and their best win was arguably over Sevilla in the Champions League.

These are worrying times for Lampard and his troops.

Great read, Ndidi is arguably the best CDM in the Prem currently, good to see him getting the recognition he deserves.
