Durban University of Technology final-year public relations student Siphokazi Dlamini launched Regalo Cosmetics earlier this month. In doing so, she made her dreams of owning her own beauty brand which embraces African beauty, come true.

The journey of building Regalo

Dlamini has been planning, researching, networking and looking at the statistics of the beauty industry for years.

In 2018, she started by learning more about beauty products. She followed established companies and brands to learn the ideals behind the magic.

In 2019, she started talking to suppliers.

And then in August 2020, she launched Regalo Cosmetics with two partners, Lindelwa Dlamini and Zamanguni Myeni.

“Building a brand has been really difficult. It is much easier to create a brand if you are well known,” Dlamini said.

“It took a lot for me to put my brand out there and show people what it has to offer and the niche it is introducing.”

African beauty boost

Dlamini is passionate about African beauty. She wants her brand to encourage African women to embrace their natural skin and hair.

Because of this ethos, Regalo has selected models with natural hair for its advertising.

“We want to bring back our roots and remind young women that it is okay to wear your natural hair,” said Dlamini.

What Regalo Cosmetics means

Regalo means “gift” in Spanish, which is also the English meaning of her first name Siphokazi.

Dlamini says Regalo aims to restore women’s beauty, culture, dignity and rightful power. She dedicates it to all women who want to go out and live with confidence every day.

“It is still an ongoing journey, building a solid brand takes years.

“I will do whatever it takes to get to the top and count among the influential women in the beauty industry,” said Dlamini.

There is a range of matte lipsticks and lip glosses so far. Dlamini is still developing more skincare, hair and face products and hopes to launch more items in December.
