Athletes get ready, the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) has received the green light from the National COVID-19 Task Force to stage its leg of the South American 10K Road Classic on Sunday at West Demerara.

Initially scheduled to be held last Sunday, the event was postponed so that the AAG and the Task Force could iron out wrinkles which could have prevented a smooth running of the race.

“We remain committed to protecting the health and safety of our athletes and  officials” said AAG’s President, Aubrey Hutson yesterday.

The association recently staged successful Cross Country events in Linden and Berbice after it was given the go ahead by the task force.

When the 18th edition of the 10K fixture runs off in three days, Hutson said he expects keen competition among the elite runners on the west side.

The event, which traditionally starts on the streets of the city and finishes in the National Park, will commence at Mary on the West Coast of Demerara from 14:00hrs and conclude at the finish line of the National Track and Field Centre.

Jonathan Fagundes, Ronell Newton, Jonathan Fordyce, Cleveland Forde, Winston Missigher and Cleveland Thomas are the front runners vying for spots on the podium.

The first five open male and female finishers will each take home $150, 000, $125, 000, $100 000, $75, 000 and $50, 000 in that order.
