The media mogul in 1998 received the Order of Jamaica, the fourth highest national honour.

Media giant Oliver Clarke died late Saturday evening at his St Andrew home after a battle with cancer.

Clarke, a former chairman of the RJRGLEANER Group has held several prominent positions including president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica.

Here are 10 things about the media mogul, who, in 1998 received the Order of Jamaica, the fourth highest national honour:

1. Born October 19, 1944

2. Was the son of a farmer and businessman

3. Married Monica Ladd in 1988

4. Was the father of one daughter, Maria Alexandra

5. Was a professional chartered accountant

6. Served for 34 years as managing director of The Gleaner until he stepped down in 2011

7. Chaired the 2003 Parliamentary Salaries Review Committee appointed by then Prime Minister PJ Patterson. It recommended the construction of a new parliament building, constituency offices and radical changes to compensation packages for lawmakers’ 

8. In 2004, the American Foundation for the University of the West Indies recognised him as a Caribbean Luminary.

9. Was a graduate of the London School of Economics.

10. received honorary doctorates from the University of the West Indies, the University of Technology, Jamaica and the Northern Caribbean University.
