Several road closures, parking restrictions and alternative routes in and around the Cape Town CBD have been announced for the State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his SONA on Thursday evening.
For the first time, the ceremony will be held outside Parliament – in the Cape Town City Hall.
Here's what to expect in and around the Cape Town CBD:
Road closure until Wednesday, 16 February
The following road currently closed and will remain so until 23:59 on Wednesday, 16 February:
Corporation Street, between Darling and Longmarket streets, completely closed to motorists. However, a walk path is available for pedestrians.
There will be kerbside fencing around the perimeter of the Cape Town City Hall, covering:
- Darling Street
- Corporation Street
- Parade Street
- Longmarket Street
Road closure for rehearsals from Monday, 7 February to Wednesday, 9 February:
The following road will be closed from 17:00 to 23:59 each day:
- Darling Street, between Plein and Buitenkant streets
- Darling Street, between Buitenkant Street and the Castle of Good Hope (traffic control)
Roads closed on Thursday, 10 February:
The following roads will be closed from 17:45 to 19:30 on Thursday:
- Roeland Street, between Buitenkant and Brandweer streets
- Buitenkant Street, between Roeland and Darling streets
Newlands
- Klipper Road in Newlands, from Main Road (M4) to Newlands Avenue (between 17:45 and 19:00, for approximately 35 minutes)
- Princess Anne Avenue, Newlands, from Newlands Avenue to Union Avenue (between 17:45 and 19:00, for approximately 35 minutes)
- Newlands, from Dean Street to Princess Anne Avenue (17:45 to 19:00, for approximately 35 minutes)
- Dean Street westbound, from Main Road (M4) to Newlands Avenue M3 (17:45 to 19:00, for 35 minutes)
Cape Town CBD
- Commercial Street, between Plein and Buitenkant streets – becomes bi-directional (04:00 to 23:45)
- Plein Street, between Roeland and Barrack streets. Contingency closure in case of an emergency (08:00 to 23:45). Roads contained in the parking (04:00 to 23:45).
There will be road closures, including parking restrictions, on the following streets:

- Parade Street, between Caledon and Darling streets
