A former top leader at Howard University pleaded guilty to stealing funds from the school, where worked from 2011 to 2017.

The Washington Post reports Doemini Mosley, 35, pleaded guilty to stealing nearly $140,000 from the university while employed by the HBCU. According to the Department of Justice, the charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud carries a maximum sentence of five years. Mosley will also be required to pay more than $139,000 in restitution and over $85,000 in forfeiture funds.

While employed at the university, Mosley worked in the financial aid office where, the FBI's Washington office said, she conspired with a co-worker, Brian Johnson, to steal the money. She later worked as an associate director of the school's bursar's office.

According to her LinkedIn, Mosley was responsible for the reviewing and re-designing of "office procedures and protocols to increase output measures while decreasing the use of human resources to complete manual tasks."

Johnson, 35, is an alumnus of Howard and worked as the associate director of the financial office from 2014 to 2016, reports The Post.

Prosecutors said it was Mosley who created the scheme to fraudulently send funds from the university to Johnson's student account although he was no longer enrolled at the school. Funds were also sent to Johnson's account after he was no longer an employee at the university. It was determined by the FBI that Johnson would send half of the funds to Mosley in cash or through an electronic transfer.

Between November 2016 and May 2017, Mosley had sent more than $107,000 to Johnson.

Separately, the Justice Department said Mosley stole an additional $32,000 from the university in May 2017.

Johnson pleaded guilty to stealing funds from the school last week and admitted to sharing half of the funds with Mosley. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 25. Mosley is expected to be sentenced on Oct. 2.

Their plea agreements stemmed from an internal investigation in 2018 that resulted in six employees being fired, including Mosley and Johnson. Tyrone Hankerson Jr., a student at the time, was also accused of stealing funds while working at the university's financial aid office, as Blavity previously reported

In 2018, Howard confirmed it fired the six employees for "gross misconduct and neglect of duties," The Post reported. It's unclear if Hankerson was among those terminated.
