The sounds of Brooklyn based artist Mal The Oddity are a little different

New track ‘Alone With You’ 'is written about someone close to me, it’s also a self-portrait'

MAL THE Oddity’s musical creations are a rich amalgamation of hip-hop, bedroom pop, indie, and electronica – pulling threads from these diverse genres to create his cinematic soundscapes.

I had a lot of questions while writing this song: how can two people feel lonely when they’re together?

His latest single “Alone With You” is an introspective offering from the Brooklyn based artist.

Mal’s music is emotionally resonant, focusing on transporting the listener to a specific time, place, and headspace.

Filled with rumbling electronics and warped soundscapes, “Alone With You” follows on from a succession of hip hop-laced, synth booming singles, “a different short movie that holds your attention and washes over you”.

“I believe that relationships are like mirrors. As much as ‘Alone With You’ is written about someone close to me, it’s also a self-portrait”, Mal explains.

“I had a lot of questions while writing this song: how can two people feel lonely when they’re together? How do we bridge the distance between ourselves and loved ones, when things have gone bad in the past?

“Are these questions for my loved one, or questions for myself? The search
for some answers resulted in this song.”

Born in Brooklyn, Mal began his artistic career writing stories and poetry in high school. He picked up producing as a hobby, before taking the art form more seriously after linking with local rappers, singers and musicians.

Over the next few years, he focussed on his songwriting skills and artistic production, influenced by the likes of Blood Orange, Frank Ocean, Travis Scott and Tame Impala.

Releasing four songs in 2020, the young artist has shifted from a contemporary hip-hop sound to a more dreamy bedroom pop / R&B realm.

His single, “Freaks and Wild Things” was a turning point for him – an ode to
his hometown of Brooklyn and the youthful spirits that inhabit it.

Since then, he has done a deep dive into that world, tapping into a new energy at the heart of his city – curating a community of wild souls coming of age at a time when the world is coming apart at the seams.

“Alone With You” is set for release November 13.
