New Patriots QB Cam Newton honors Chadwick Boseman with touchdown salute

Cam Newton took time to honor Chadwick Boseman after he quickly scored a touchdown

Cam Newton took time out on the football field to show love to the late Chadwick Boseman and Black Panther.

The New England Patriots star quickly scored a touchdown on Sunday leading into the second quarter. He then crossed his arms across his chest demonstrating the iconic “Wakanda Forever” symbol from the globally successful film Black Panther.

Boseman played the beloved lead and hero, T’Challa, in the film and amassed adoring fans from all over the world. So when news broke last month of Boseman’s passing it left many devastated.

Fans rushed to social media during the game to show support of how Newton celebrated the touchdown.

The New England Patriot Twitter account posted a photo of Newton doing the symbolic pose with a caption that read,” Wakanda Forever.”

Newton joins a wave of athletes who have used the symbol during a game. When the film debuted in 2018, apparently Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba of Manchester United were the first to adopt the symbol after scoring during a soccer game. Tennis player Sachia Vickery also used the symbol in 2018 during her victory at the BNP Paribas Open.

“That was definitely ‘Wakanda Forever,” Vickery told WTA Tennis at the time. “I’m so obsessed with the movie. It’s taking over my life. I have seen it four times already. Literally, I’m obsessed. I have watched it twice here. I may just keep watching it because it’s been working out well for me.”

Fast forward to today, Lebron James and baseball player Marcell Ozuna have used the symbol at a game as a tribute to Boseman during their games.

The symbol may have given Newton and the Patriots good luck because they won the game against the Miami Dolphins, 21-11. Newton finished the game with two touchdowns, 75 rushing yards, and completed 15 of his 19 passes.

This is Newton’s first season with the team and he recently broke the franchise’s record for most rushing yards by a quarterback. The Patriots will take on The Seattle Seahawks next Sunday.
