The University of Virginia reportedly has mandated that students looking to enroll for the fall semester must take a coronavirus test.
A free kit will be given to students and they will be requested to self-administer the test about a week before coming to the Charlottesville campus, the university said in a news release issued Thursday, WTOP reported.
“Results will be available 24 to 48 hours after the laboratory received the sample,” the release said. “Students also are strongly recommended to self-quarantine for 14 days prior to returning.”
Students who test negative will be allowed to enroll for classes but those who test positive will not be cleared to return and will be asked to self-isolate at home and advised to consult a doctor. All students and staff members of the university who have tested negative and cleared to return will be required to complete a training program on how to stay safe of COVID-19 and limit the spread of it.
As of Friday, Virginia has more than 72,000 confirmed coronavirus cases, including roughly 2,000 deaths, according to state health department data.
