Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden swept through the DMV region on election night, putting D.C., Maryland and Virginia in his win column as he attempts to unseat Republican incumbent Donald Trump.

The Associated Press had called all three races for Biden shortly after polls in the jurisdictions closed at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Election officials in both D.C. and Maryland, two Democratic strongholds, reported a steady stream of voters Tuesday in addition to thousands of residents who had already cast early ballots.

AP actually called Virginia for Biden about 30 minutes before the polls closed, citing the results from early returns and an AP survey of the electorate showing the former vice president well ahead.

Biden, who picked up 26 electoral votes from those jurisdictions, also won the northeastern states of New Jersey, New York, Delaware and Massachusetts.

As of 1:55 a.m. Wednesday, Biden had 224 electoral votes to Trump’s 213 with several important states yet to call their races, according to AP’s count. The threshold for victory is 270 electoral votes.
