Brad Binder scores high praise after sensational MotoGP win

President Cyril Ramaphosa has issued out a message of congratulations to Brad Binder, who won became the first South African in decades to clinch a MotoGP victory in the Czech Republic on Saturday.

Two days before his 25th birthday and just a handful of races since graduating to the premier class of motorcycle racing’s elite, Binder became the first rider from outside of Europe to finish at the top of the podium in five years.

This was after clinching his first and his team, Red Bull KTM’s maiden victory, beating Franco Morbidelli and former champions Johann Zarco, who took up the other podium spots.

Binder completed the circuit in 41 minutes and 38 seconds to clinch victory and, speaking after the race, he said it was a dream come true.

High praise from the president

His remarkable achievement caught attention from the highest office in the land, with Ramaphosa issuing out a message of congratulation to the Potchefstroom-born racer.

“Brad Binder made all South Africans proud today with his historic victory. We share in his elation and look forward to his long and successful career at the top of his sport,” the president said in a statement issued out on Sunday.

“Coming as it did on Women’s Day, which brings us together as a nation, Brad’s victory in the Czech Grand Prix provides us with inspiration, hope and pride and lifts our spirits at a time we need this.”

Binder is the first rookie to finish at the top of the podium since Marc Marquez made his MotoGP debut.
