Dlamini-Zuma, Sisulu Join Forces for ANC Top Job
Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Lindiwe Sisulu look set to join forces and push for the ANC presidency and deputy presidency, under one banner, News24 reports. While the two women - whose campaign teams met last week - have the backing of former president Jacob Zuma, they do not have the backing of any provincial executive committee.
David Makhura to Step Down as Gauteng Premier
The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng had asked David Makhura to vacate his office, following its provincial conference in June 2022. Makura had indicated previously that he would be willing to walk away from the job to make way for new leaders, Eye Witness News reports. It is thought that the ANC will put forward Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza LesufI as its desired replacement.
Cape Town Wants to Turn Its Residents Into Power Heroes
In a project like the one in the UK, the City of Cape Town now wants residents to cut their electricity usage amid Eskom's rolling power cuts. But the request to locals won't go without some compensation, Eye Witness News reports. Cape Town city officials want to transform residents and businesses into so-called 'Power Heroes'. The metro will now issue a tender for third parties to incentivise households and commercial entities to reduce electricity consumption by 60 megawatts on the local grid.
Heatwave For One More Day In Some Parts of Country
Some parts of the country can expect one more day of sweltering heat as the South African Weather Service announces high temperatures will continue on Tuesday as the heat wave rolls over most areas. Extremely hot conditions are affecting Gauteng, the North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal and people are cautioned to stay hydrated, Eye Witness News reports.
Good News for Motorists - Price of Petrol to Drop Again!
There will be more relief at the petrol pumps at midnight, with prices set to drop for the third month on a row. 95 Octane will go down by R1.02 and 89 cents a litre for 93 Octane. This is the third decrease in a row for battling motorists, the Automobile Association reports. Not so good news for diesel users is that prices will increase by 10 cents and 15 cents for the different grades. Illuminating paraffin will go down by 82 cents.
Manhunt After German Tourist Killed In Mpumalanga
Four German tourists who were touring in the Mpumalanga province were attacked and the driver of the vehicle fatally shot through the window. The attack has been condemned by the police. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing, IOL reports.
