  • A man was arrested after a group of people stormed the Jouberton police station in North West on Monday.
  • He appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted robbery and assault.
  • Police have carried out operations and cracked down on gangs in the area.

Police in Klerksdorp, North West have been on high alert after a group stormed the Jouberton police station on Monday. A man has since been arrested and appeared in court in connection with the incident.

The group is believed to be linked to gangs in the area and demanded to see the station commander, according to a statement. The mob accused the police chief "of conniving with one of the gangs".

According to reports, the gang attempted to disarm an officer of his R5 rifle, but a member of the Tactical Response Team intervened and removed the group from the station.

"The exact motive is not yet known. However, it is suspected that the incident is related to [the] setting alight of several houses and vehicles since Saturday," police spokesperson Adele Myburgh told News24.

A man was taken into custody the following day in connection with the incident.

"The man was arrested after he was recognised at the police station for participating in the attack on the Jouberton police on Monday," Myburgh said.

He faces charges of attempted robbery and assault. He appeared in the Klerksdorp Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Days after the incident, the authorities carried out operations in the area and clamped down on suspected gangs.

On Wednesday evening, 40 people, aged 18 to 40, were arrested in police raids at a guest house in Extension 14.

"During the operation, three firearms with ammunition were confiscated, as well as two petrol bombs and numerous dangerous weapons like pangas and knives," Myburgh said.

Two men were taken into custody after police found an unlicensed firearm, ammunition and a petrol bomb in their possession.

Police are investigating whether any of the suspects are linked to the attack on the police station earlier this week.
