Three people have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and murdering a man in a vigilante attack in Gauteng and burying the body in a shallow grave.

The three men were arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Special Task Team in Reiger Park on Wednesday.

The arrests stem from an incident in January when two people, who were accused of being involved in a house robbery, were allegedly assaulted by six residents.

One of the victims reportedly succumbed to his injuries, while the other person managed to escape, said EMPD spokesperson Katlego Mphahlele.

EMPD officers responded to a tip-off that led them to the three men, who were allegedly part of a group of vigilantes, and apprehended them.

Mphahlele said:

The trio, who are aged 23 to 37, confessed to the killing and volunteered to take EMPD officers to a shallow grave in the nearest mining dump near Delmore Gardens.

EMPD officers, along with the police, visited the site and found the body of a man wrapped in refuse bags.

The three men were taken to Reiger Park police station. They are expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court soon, Mphahlele said.

Police are still searching for three more men who are linked to the vigilante attack.
