Obituary: Janet M. Fielder “Lady J” dies in Las Vegas at 84

Janet M. Fielder, 84, originally of Pittsburgh, died Wednesday, May 6, 2020, in Las Vegas following a long battle with COPD. Janet was the former wife of the late 12th Ward Democratic Chairman Dock Fielder, Jr., with whom she shared 32 years of marriage.

She was preceded in death by her parents Agnes McCray and James and Christine Calcutta; sisters Billie Williams, Natalie West; brother Roger Graham; children Larry James Fielder, Sr. and Steven Douglas Fielder, Sr. She leaves to mourn her children Anthony (Tony), Jacqueline (Rev. Jacque), Carolyn and Donna Fielder, all of Pittsburgh; siblings Carole Miles of Las Vegas, James Calcutta, Jr. of New York, Nancy Coates, Roberta Draper, Alice King, Frank McCray and Linda McCray McGowen, all of California; goddaughter Annette King in Pennsylvania; 28 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Janet grew up in the Hill District and attended Fifth Avenue High School. Before becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant, Janet worked at Warner Cable Corporation in Pittsburgh. She was a 12th Ward Allegheny County Democratic Committeewoman for many years. Her superb management and teaching skills made her a strong and strategic force behind the scenes. In her leisure time, Janet enjoyed fashion, teaching etiquette, cooking, sewing and cosmetology. She was well-liked and affectionately called “Lady J” by her family and close friends because of her classy style. She was a member of Nabhi Christian Ministries Church.

Because of restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic, funeral services and interment will be private. Memorial services to be announced will be held at a later date at Nabhi Christian Ministries Church, 7060 Lemington Ave., Pittsburgh. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Janet may be made to the church.
