Kenya: Azimio Condemns Arrest of 9 Leaders Over Anti-Govt Demonstrations

Nairobi — The Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition party has condemned the arrest of nine leaders over the anti-governmental protests.

In a statement, Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua described the action as unconstitutional and malicious.

She stated that the arrests were a desperate attempt by the government to paralyze the Azimio coalition.

"Last night Hon Babu Owino MP Embakasi East was arrested by police and is being held incommunicado. His whereabouts remain unknown," read the statement.

Others arrested included Kilifi South Member of Parliament Ken Chonga, Teddy Mwambire, Speaker Kilifi County, Nairobi MCAs Wilfred Odallo (Mabatini), Redson Onyango (Ngei), Erick Otieno and Anthony Otsula who are budget officers at the Nairobi County Assembly.

Karua also confirmed that Raila Odinga's bodyguard Maurice Ogeta was abducted by police on his way to work.

"Dennis Onyango (Raila's Spokesman) was arrested/abducted from his house this morning during which time a search without warrant was conducted," she said. "Both Dennis and Morris are close associates of Azimio leader Raila Odinga."

She called out the government for the arrests arguing it is a desperate attempt to sabotage the maandamano exercise.
