Cabbie awaits fate in Heroes Circle crash deaths

A Kingston taxi driver who killed two pedestrians in 2018 when his car ploughed into a group of persons at Heroes Circle in Kingston was on Wednesday remanded for sentencing on June 18 after pleading guilty in the Home Circuit Court.

Six persons were injured, including 17-year-old Shawndie Ferguson and 29-year-old Tarick Dawkins, both of Kingston addresses, who later succumbed to their injuries at hospital.

When the matter came up before Justice Lorna Shelly Williams on Wednesday, Tamone Wright pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by dangerous driving.

Wright was initially charged with two counts of manslaughter but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge after his attorney-at-law, Christopher Townsend, made a request, which was accepted by the prosecution.

The court heard that on September 30 at 11:20 p.m., the driver of a motor car lost control and crashed into the group.

Following the incident, Wright was arrested and charged following an investigation.

However, Townsend is maintaining that his client lost control of the vehicle after shots were fired at his car. The gunshots, he said, appeared to have come from the police.

At the time of the incident, the police had reportedly been chasing Wright after he disobeyed their signal to stop.
