KwaNongoma mayor Albert Mncwango was saddened by the tragic death of two teenage girls who died in an accident involving his convoy on Thursday 16 July at R66 in White City.

According to reports, the girls, Asanda Ngcobo and Olona Ndebele died after being dragged by mayor’s convoy for several metres.

“Obviously, this is a tragic accident and we are all saddened by the turn of events. It’s painful to all of us,”

said Mncwango.

URGENT INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

It is understood that the convoy had just dropped the mayor at his home in Nongoma, northern KwaZulu-Natal when the incident happened.

KZN Transport MEC Bheki Ntuli has launched an urgent investigation into a fatal car accident.

In a statement, Ntuli said:

“According to eyewitnesses, the vehicle was travelling at an excessive speed, killing the two girls aged 13 who were walking on the side of the road. This gruesome accident has sparked a community protest in the area, with the community barricading the road demanding that action be taken.”

DRIVER MUST BE FIRED: EFF AND DA

The EFF and the DA in KwaZulu-Natal are calling for an urgent action to be taken against the driver of the vehicle.

Ntuli visited the crime scene where the teenage girls died at and called for peace in the area as the irate community members were baying for the blood of the driver. The 48-year-old driver was arrested and detained at Nongoma police station, according to reports. He was expected to appear in court soon.

NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW

“There is no one who is above the law and members of the protection service must also adhere to the laws of our country, including the National Road Traffic Act. Those who work with public representatives have a duty to protect the society and need to be extra cautious on the road,”

he added in the statement.

Cases of culpable homicide and negligent driving were being investigated, Ntuli said.

Mayor Mncwango wouldn’t be drawn into commenting about the negligence on his driver’s part, saying it was difficult for him because he was not there.

He, however, said they would allow the investigation to take place without interference.
