Following Chris Green’s appointment as captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Head Coach Johan Botha has thrown his support behind the 26-year-old Australian.

“I just think he is a calm cool player under pressure first of all, the way he leads, the way he plays the way he trains, he demands respect from the other players,” Botha told Stabroek Sport in an exclusive interview recently.

The Head Coach added, “I’ve always said as a captain I want to lead from the front and as you know you don’t always get the rewards on field, you don’t always get the big wickets or 50 not out but the way he trains, he leads the training, the guys respect him which is one of the important points and he has fitted in brilliantly in the Guyana set up.”

Green joined the Warriors set up in 2018 and captained them in four matches towards the back end of that season including the final.

Botha compared the similarities in Green and their usual captain, Shoaib Malik who did not join the side after being named in Pakistan’s side for a tour to England.

“He brings a calmness to the group, I think Shoaib was good at that, you know when things get a bit tight in the middle and we are certainly going to do our best to prepare them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Green welcomed the opportunity to lead the team and indicated that while things are working well as it is, he likes to put his spin on things.

The new captain acknowledged that his work is made easier because of the family oriented structure in the side where everyone understands their job and functions efficiently.

“Everyone understands each other’s game pretty well and I think we can really share the load and contribute at different times as well so I think that is the main focus, it’s not going to be down to one or two players, it’s going to be different players at different stages putting their hands up to make good performances and contribute to the success of this team.

Green’s T20 career has spanned 82 matches where he returned 65 wickets with his off-spin and strikes at 127 with the bat.
