Allegheny County reports 114 COVID cases, 5 deaths; state officials warn of contact-tracing scams

Allegheny County health officials reported 114 COVID-19 infections Thursday, including one among a resident as young as 5 months old. Since mid-March, the county health department has reported 9,192 cases of the virus.

The cases were identified to the Allegheny County Health Department [ACHD] out of a pool of 1,799 test results. Though the 5-month old is the youngest resident included among the newly-reported cases, the infections range in age to include individuals through 101 years old. All of the positive tests are dated between July 13 and Aug. 12.

The county health department on Thursday also reported five additional deaths, which occurred between July 27 and Aug. 12 and raised its death toll to 278 since March 14. Those who died were between their 80s and 100s and were connected to long-term care facilities.

Five residents have been hospitalized as of Thursday, raising the total number of hospitalizations to 755.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health [DOH] confirmed 991 cases of COVID-19 and 24 deaths on Thursday. In total, since March, 122,121 residents have contracted the virus statewide and 7,409 have died.

Between Aug. 6 and 12, 162,548 COVID-19 tests were administered across the state. Of those, 5,416 have been positive.

Of the state’s total number of COVID-19 deaths, 5,037, nearly 68%, have occurred among residents of nursing or personal care facilities. Residents and employees of 888 facilities across 61 counties, including Allegheny, make up 24,436 of Pennsylvania’s total infections.

As of Thursday, 8,790 health care workers in the state have contracted the virus.
