The Prince George’s County Drug Policy Coalition has awarded 13 scholarships totaling $22,000 to students residing in District 8, which includes Clinton, Forest Heights, Fort Washington, Glassmanor, Marlow Heights, and Oxon Hill.
The awards were part of the coalition’s Empowering Future Leaders scholarship program, which since 2012 has awarded $185,000 to area students to help defray the cost of their education.
“These students did an excellent job responding to our application requirements and the essay question related to reducing interest in electronic cigarettes,” said Dr. Valencia Campbell, coalition president. “We know that young people have been targeted by marketing campaigns on using flavored cigarettes as a means to capture interest in this unhealthy product. We are so proud of their active engagement in positive activities in their communities and their churches which include volunteering at homeless shelters, tutoring, assisting cancer patients, mentoring and more.”
