Mamelodi Sundowns welcomed back Rulani Mokwena earlier in the week, after the former Orlando Pirates caretaker mentor took up a role as assistant coach at the Tshwane giants.

The 33-year-old was part of title-winning Sundowns sides prior to his move across the Jukskei, where he linked up with the club whose legends consist of his grandfather Eric Sono, as well as his uncle, Jomo Sono.

Back to where it began for Rulani Mokwena

Having had a short spell at the helm at the Buccaneers, he was briefly unemployed after a stint at Chippa United.

On Wednesday, his return to the Brazilians was confirmed, as he returned to his former post under coach Pitso Mosimane.

With the reigning league champions back in training, Mokwena is also back at work and is delighted to resume his duties.

“I think it felt normal, in the sense that these were family members and we were only temporarily distant from each other for a couple of years,” Mokwena told the Sundowns website.

“But I’ve come back into a very familiar environment, with a lot of very familiar faces, and one that’s kept its ethos of professionalism, hard work, success and drive to be the best club, not only in South Africa but in Africa.

“So, it feels good and I’m humbled that the opportunity presented itself, and I’ve got to take this opportunity to thank the president who has always been a father figure and someone that’s always maintained good relations with me.

“And also Coach Pitso, who has taught me so much with regards to what it takes to become a good coach and continued to demonstrate his qualities by winning trophies and dominating South African football.”

Mokwena’s return has been welcomed by Mosimane, who expressed joy at being reunited with his mentee.

Sundowns are expected to resume their title defence against Mokwena’s old side, Orlando Pirates.
