The KwaZulu-Natal transport department is investigating two deadly crashes that took place on the province's roads on Sunday. The two accidents resulted in 12 deaths.
Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Sipho Hlomuka said a team of forensic investigators was probing both accidents.
The investigation would also look into driver behaviour, roadworthiness of the vehicles, validity of the vehicle, and drivers’ licences.
The first accident, between a minibus taxi and truck near the Bergville Interchange on the N3, led to the deaths of seven people. The crash happened between the interchange and the Tugela Plaza.
Another six people were treated on the scene for injuries ranging from severe to critical.

"Preliminary reports suggest that a minibus driver lost control and veered towards the direction of a truck," said Hlomuka.
In another accident, at about 20:30 on Sunday night, five people were killed on the N2 highway in Amanzimtoti. The youngest victim was a four-year-old child.
Three other people were injured and were taken to hospital.
"The torrential weather could not be ruled out in some of these accidents. However, the Department of Transport has appealed to road users to adjust their driving and be extra cautious," said Hlomuka.
He added that the department remains concerned about motorists travelling over the Christmas weekend.
"As part of the plan for the long weekend, we embarked on many proactive plans to reduce the levels of crashes. It is unacceptable that 12 people lost their lives on the road. Our teams, working with other agencies, are investigating the possible causes of these fatal accidents.
"We also wish to extend our deepest condolences to all affected families. As we are approaching the Christmas weekend, we will improve the deployment of traffic police in strategic areas."
