Haitians held in people smuggling probe likely to be deported

A number of Haitian nationals held in a people smuggling probe are currently being accommodated at a shelter and they are expected to be deported.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that it is suspected that the Haitian nationals were being smuggled to French Guiana.

A source revealed that during interrogation, one of the females told investigators that she was  given two children at the Port-au-Prince airport in Haiti to take to French Guiana.

The children are currently in the custody of the Child Care and Protection Agency.

Police sources had previously told this newspaper that two busloads of Haitian nationals were intercepted during an operation on Saturday on the Mabura to Lethem trail.

The police sources had said that the Haitian nationals had given information to immigration that they were here for either business or vacation in the capital.

Police believe that the Haitian nationals are part of a human smuggling ring.

There have long been concerns about Haitian and Cuban nationals entering the country legally but exiting illegally.
