GEORGE THE Poet will bring together some of the brightest black British stars from the world of spoken word for a special Black History Month event next week.

The live show, which aims to celebrate black culture, educate and encourage social action, will premiere on YouTube Music, hosted by Capital Xtra’s Remel London. It will highlight the importance of remembering there is still work to be done when it comes to the fight for equality and feature performances by award-winning poet Sophia Thakur and upcoming grime artist Jords.

It will also mark George’s 10 year anniversary as George the Poet.

George the Poet said: “With the most recent End SARS protests and rising awareness of injustices faced by black people worldwide, the BLM movement is becoming more urgent every day. Black History Month is a crucial time because it allows us to reflect. The ‘Black Lives Still Matter’ show will platform artistes that I feel are using their voices for the cause.”

He added: “This show will also mark 10 years of George The Poet, which I’m proud to celebrate with YouTube because of their role in propelling the careers of black creatives like myself.”

Black Lives Still Matter is the finale of YouTube Music’s of Black History Month season.

The series of virtual events, which has featured Black pub quiz PRTYHERE, was curated by Sheniece Charway, YouTube artist relations manager.

Charway said: “YouTube plays an important role in not only helping people and communities connect, but in propelling diverse voices forward in a year that’s seen our creative industries under serious threat.

“Our Black History Month programme is a microcosm of our year-long commitment to amplifying Black narratives and voices across our platform.

“We are delighted to be concluding the month with George The Poet’s spoken word show. As a polymath who sparks vital conversations through art, he truly embodies the values of YouTube and our Black History Month programme.”
