  • Gauteng accounted for 57% of the new cases recorded on Sunday.

South Africa recorded 16 585 new laboratory-confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Sunday and 333 deaths, bringing the official death toll to 61 840.

According to a statement by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), as of Sunday, the country recorded 2 062 896 laboratory-confirmed cases.

"The National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD)… reports that 16 585 new Covid-19 cases have been identified in South Africa, representing a 30.2% positivity rate," the statement read.

As of Sunday, Gauteng recorded 702 083 confirmed cases of Covid-19, followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 360 163 and the Western Cape with 332 281.

"The Gauteng province accounts for the majority of new cases (57%), followed by the Western Cape (11%), and the KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo (7% each) provinces," NICD spokesperson Sinenhlanhla Jimoh said.

Gauteng recorded 9 443 new cases on Sunday, the Western Cape 1 784 and Limpopo 1 230.

There was an increase of 384 hospital admissions in the last 24 hours. As of Sunday, 13 972 people were in both public and private hospitals for Covid-19.

South Africa had conducted 13 450 014 tests, of which 54 879 had been carried out in the last 24 hours.

The recovery rate is 87.6%, which translates to 1 808 082 recoveries.

The total number of people vaccinated is 3 314 278, with 6 609 doses having been administered in the last 24 hours.
