Former University of Fort Hare professor, Edwin Ijeoma, was released on R5 000 bail by the Zwelitsha Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).
Ijeoma, accused of stealing a university vehicle, was arrested on 27 April.
He will return to court on 18 June, said NPA spokesperson Anelisa Ngcakani.
Ijeoma is also the subject of a Hawks investigation, in connection with a case of fraud, worth R5 million.
Hawks spokesperson Yolisa Mgolodela said the case was still under investigation.
Ijeoma, a Nigerian national, recently had his citizenship revoked.

He resigned from the University of Fort Hare amid an investigation into allegations that he irregularly admitted axed Health MEC Sindiswa Gomba for an honours degree in public administration.
Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane, who was supervised by Ijeoma, was later excluded, and subsequently deregistered from the university for being irregularly admitted to the master's programme.
The university said it did not have Mabuyane's recognition of prior learning portfolio, which had to be assessed, as per the university's rules.
Mabuyane is challenging his deregistration.
His lawyers have since sent the institution a letter, threatening legal action if the university council doesn't overturn the decision taken by the senate.
