Bathers, paddlers and fishers were urged to be careful of increased shark activity after a beached whale was euthanised between St Francis Bay and Plettenberg Bay on Sunday.

The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said the whale washed ashore on Oyster Bay's main beach.

Experts were called to assist.

"With the animal appearing to be in poor health and hard aground in shallow surf, the decision was made by the vet to euthanise the animal," the NSRI said.

Police euthanised the whale under the supervision of a vet.

"Because of the beached whale carcass, there is the strong likelihood of increased shark activity along this stretch of coast between St Francis Bay and Plettenberg Bay, and caution is advised," the NSRI said.

Arrangements are being made to have the carcass removed.
