No discussions had over Middendorp’s future, says Kaizer Chiefs boss

The Kaizer Chiefs management has not had any discussions regarding the future of head coach Ernst Middendorp, according to TimesLive.

The German mentor arrived at Naturena for a second stint in December 2018. He has since guided the club to the verge of a first league title since 2015.

Despite his success, there have been rumours linking the Glamour Boys to a new man at the helm, with names such as Gavin Hunt and Benni McCarthy springing up in the conversation.

Speaking to TimesLive, Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has moved to dispel the reports.

“Unfortunately we’ve not even had that discussion as a club‚” Motaung told the publication.

“So it’s rumours that you find and talk which is out there‚ which we don’t know of.

“So at this moment I don’t want to entertain the coach’s issues because there is nothing – we have never had a discussion. We have not sat down and discussed his future.

“The coach has a contract‚ he still has one more season to go. And we have not even sat down to say ‘the coach must leave’ or anything.

“And we don’t know anything. These are just rumour and rumours. We don’t know anything. We have not had those discussions.”

Successful second coming 

Middendorp’s second stint at Kaizer Chiefs got off to a rocky start, as he failed to guide the club to a top-eight finish after an indifferent first half of the season with Italian mentor, Giovanni Solinas at the helm.

He, however, enjoyed more success in the 2019/20 season, as Amakhosi spent the majority of the campaign at the top of the league standings.

Ahead of the abrupt stop to proceedings, Chiefs had won 15 of their 22 games to sit four points clear of defending league champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The club will see out the rest of the season at Orlando Stadium when the league resumes in August.
